The curfew has been in place since the outbreak in 11 districts, including Coimbatore. Liquor stores have therefore been denied access. In Coimbatore, wine lovers regularly travel to various states, including Kerala and Karnataka, to smuggle bottles of liquor to Coimbatore. And some are brewing counterfeit liquor.
Meanwhile, drug addicts go to drug stores and buy sleeping pills and painkillers. So crime is on the rise.
Deputy Commissioner of Crime Uma told reporters: 'Drug addicts have been involved in a variety of criminal activities due to the curfew. So do not give sleeping pills, painkillers without a doctor's prescription in drug stores. If found to be sold without prescription, the license of those drug stores will be revoked.'
