CAPA urges CM to intervene and overrule 3-hour power shutdown announced by TANGEDCO

In a letter to the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, the Consumer Awareness and Protection Association (CAPA) thanked the CM of Tamil Nadu, M K Stalin on taking massive measures to bring down the Cvoid-19 rate in the State. 'As a consequence, transport services are being made accessible to the public in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengelpattu and Kanchipuram which once again indicates that there has been a decline in the Covid-19 rate,' opined CAPA members.

CAPA highlighted that the Minister for Electricity issued a press release in the Times of India, dated June 2, 2021 asking TANGEDCO to desist from maintenance work till the end of the lockdown period in Tamil Nadu. But TANGEDCO Coimbatore Region in The New Indian Express, dated June 21, 2021 carried a press release that announced a 3-hour power shutdown to be implemented in its region comprising of Coimbatore, Tirupur and Nilgiris for 10 days, beginning from June 21, 2021.

'The announcement of TANGEDCO sent shock waves to the general public in the Coimbatore region of TANGEDCO, knowing that it would adversely affect students attending online classes and taking online semester examinations and COVID-19 patients in hospitals. The Minister for Electricity clarified in The Hindu dated June 4, 2021 that measures have been taken to provide uninterrupted power supply to Government Hospitals.

Regions of TANGEDCO, other than Coimbatore have announced a 3-hour power shutdown from June 21, 2021. We request the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu to take action topostpone this 3-hour hour shutdown as announced by Coimbatore TANGEDCO and to enforce the power shutdown once normalcy is restored, not only in Coimbatore but in all other districts,' urged N R Ravisankar, President of CAPA.
