Siruvani Dam water level rises to 25 ft

Siruvani Dam water level rises to 25 ft.

Coimbatore: The water level of Siruvani Dam which supplies drinking water to the people of Coimbatore has risen to 25 ft.

Siruvani Dam is the main source of drinking water in Coimbatore and also distributes to Palakkad, Kerala, in total comprising 36 wards and roadside villages in the Coimbatore Corporation. The dam is 49.5 ft. high, but the dam only holds water up to a height of 45 ft. The dam is located at an elevation of 878 m above sea level and can hold 650 million cubic feet of water.

During the summer months of April and May, most of the water in the dam was discharged for drinking purposes. In addition, the water level of the dam began to decrease due to insufficient rainfall in the catchment areas of the dam. In particular, water was discharged for drinking from the last sluice of the dam. The southwest monsoon has begun in the state of Kerala and rains have been widespread. Coimbatore has also received good monsoon rains since last week in Valparai, Aliyar and Cinchona. Due to this rain, the water level of Siruvani Dam has risen.

An official of the Drinking Water Drainage Board said, "The water level of the Siruvani Dam had dropped to less than 5 ft. due to summer. It then rose to 15 ft. due to summer rains. Currently, the southwest monsoon is heavy in Kerala and due to its effect, the catchment areas of Siruvani Dam have been receiving good rains too. Due to this, the water level of the dam has risen to 25 ft.

Currently 97.30 MLT of water is being discharged daily from Siruvani Dam for Coimbatore drinking water requirements. Due to the possibility of monsoon rains in the days ahead, the water level of the dam is expected to increase further. The condition of the dam is being monitored regularly," he added.
