7,500 families benefited during pandemic till date, thanks to Coimbatore man's Mission Milk initiative

As many as 7,500 families have benefited till date, thanks to Sindhi man’s Mission Milk initiative

Coimbatore: During the second wave of the pandemic, as many as 7,500 people have as on Friday, benefited from the ‘Mission Milk’ initiative, which is the brainchild of Kiran Punjabi, a Sindhi man from Coimbatore. Instead of doing different things, the businessman by profession is doing things differently in these tough times.

At a time when several good Samaritans are involved in doing service including preparing and distributing food to distributing medicines and medical accessories, groceries and essentials and the likes, the 44-year old business man chose to take care of the basic need of children, adults and the aged by providing them with half-a-litre of milk packet.

Throwing light on the project, Kiran Punjabi tells SimpliCity “A majority of us begin our day and some of us even end our day by consuming milk in some form or the other. The fact that the pandemic has deprived so many families of not being able to purchase their share of milk worried me.” Thus, Kiran Punjabi chooses to make up for this lack of necessity that families are compromising on, by providing them with half-a-litre (or more depending on the need) of freshly purchased milk packet from Government-run Aavin outlet which is located right opposite his home in Sai Baba Colony here.

Started on 23 May, Kiran Punjabi tells us that as on Friday, as many as 3,750 litres of milk have been distributed to 7,500 families in various pockets of the textile city. Among his long list of beneficiaries are members from the transgender community, leprosy patients, inmates of orphanage homes and the average families who cannot afford to purchase milk for their daily consumption.

The Sindhi Forum Coimbatore has contributed funds to support this mission and cash donations have come from other sources as well. Come rain or shine, this man never fails to wake up and make sure that the milk packets are handed over to the needy. “If for any reason I fail to wake up on time, Preethi, my wife wakes me up and I begin my day by reaching the location as planned to do the distribution.” Kiran Punjabi said.

He has till date distributed milk packets in areas including in Venkatapuram, Ukkadam, Ganapathy, Edayarpalayam and Velandipalayam among others.

Kiran Punjabi does his homework well. “I usually make an estimate of the number of children who are residing in a particular area and take into account the number of families who are in need in the respective vicinity, place an order for the required litres of milk a day in advance with the Aavin milk booth that is located opposite my home. I always purchase and carry with me more than the estimated requirement just to make sure that no one who is in need goes home empty handed.” Kiran Punjabi adds.

Asked for how long he intends to continue on this Mission Milk initiative, in a jiffy comes the answer “Milk is a necessity and not a luxury. With the support of sponsors, my financial strength, with the blessings of my mother and my son’s encouragement, I wish to continue with this mission as long as I can.”
