Portrait of Thiruvalluvar dressed in saffron removed from Coimbatore Agricultural University
Coimbatore: Tamil Nadu Agricultural University on Marudhamalai Road in Coimbatore has a library in which poet Thiruvalluvar's portrait is framed.
A controversy has suddenly erupted about the saffron-coloured attire of Thiruvalluvar in the portrait. The colour of saffron on the portrait of the renowned poet is suddenly being opposed by various organizations including the Communists and Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam.
It is alleged that the officials are trying to add a religious hue at the University through the portrait of Thirvalluvar in saffron-coloured clothes. "We have informed the Government about this that they should intervene and take appropriate action," stated the complainants.
The administration of Agricultural University has clarified on the issue stating that the portrait of Thiruvalluvar was not new and was placed in the library in 2015 but has now been removed.
