Coimbatore-based student receives Guinness World Record Attempt Certificate for participating in AI for India 1.0 initiative

Coimbatore: It all started with 19-year old Dharani M completing the week long python course offered by Grab Ur Vernacular Imprint (GUVI).

Having successfully completed the respective course, the teenager received an email inviting her to participate in the 'AI for India' world record event. “This is how I got to know about the event.” Dharani told SimpliCity. Throwing light on the initiative, the young student tells us that GUVI is an ISO certified vernacular tech-learning platform incubated by IIT-Madras & IIM-Ahmedabad.

AI for India 1.0 event was hosted with the intention to make India, the AI leader. The aim of the event was to enhance AI development in India by propelling a tech-skilling journey via python. Over 1 billion Indians were exposed to programming through the coding revolution. In addition to this as many as 1,12,314 people participated in the ‘AI-for-India’ Initiative that was organized by IIT Madras-incubated startup GUVI and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to up-skill Indians in python programming language. They set the Guinness world record for ‘Most numbers of users to take a programming lesson in 24 Hours,’ beating the previous record by 50 times.

In addition to this, as many as 1.43-lakh users took part in the online training session to build a Face Recognition App during the same event. The programme was conducted by GUVI in association with AICTE, IIT Madras Research Park and BUDDI. The host of the workshop guided the participants on how to build a facial recognition app right from scratch. Unlike regular IT workshops, the medium of instruction was in three vernacular languages including, Tamil, Telugu and Hindi besides in English. The vernacular approach is one of the features of GUVI.

The participants had to pick up a slot and language of their convenience. The event also featured keynote speakers from top industry experts and some of the biggest names in the public education sector, which offered their insight into the IT, business, entrepreneurial and programming landscape. AICTE member-secretary Rajive Kumar said “the event was the second world record in which the council had been involved in one year.”

A second year student of Sri Ramakrishna College of Arts and Science (SR-CAS), Dharani who is currently pursuing her second year Bachelor of Information Technology study programme credits her success to (Mr) Dr. B. L. Shivakumar principal of her college for the encouragement, motivation and financial support offered, tutor Mrs. Vidya , Head of Department Mrs. Sumathi who helped her unlock the Pro-Subscription offered by GUVI which is a free gateway to the Official Participation Certificate from Guinness World Record Team (E-copy).

Having achieved this Dharani tells SimpliCity that she plans to make a career in mobile application software development. Also on her wish list is to study for a Master's in Computer Applications (MCA). Currently, she juggles her time between studying her academic subjects and doing computer courses and other related courses online. She says that she has successfully completed more than 100 such certificate courses till date.
