Rivers flooded due to heavy rains in the surrounding areas of Valparai.
Coimbatore: The southwest monsoon is intensifying in the Valparai area of Coimbatore district. The Nadumalai river in Valparai has been flooded due to heavy rains since last night.
Birla waterfall near Valparai is overflowing. Public access to the area is prohibited and also the water level of the Sholayar Dam is rising. The normal life of the public has been affected by this heavy rain.
As of 6 am today, 107 mm rainfall was recorded in upper Nirar dam, 100 mm of rainfall was recorded at the lower Nirar dam. 52 mm of rainfall was recorded in the Sholayar Dam area and 39 mm was recorded in Valparai nagar. The Sholayar Dam receives 2823 cubic feet of water. 426.39 cubic feet of water is discharged from the dam for power generation.
The water level in the 165 feet high dam is currently at 65.70 feet. The Sholayar Dam is expected to fill up soon as it continues to rain in the Valparai area. Public works officials are monitoring the dam continuously.
