Tea estate workers in Valparai hard hit due to heavy rains
Coimbatore: With heavy rains and gusty winds lashing Valparai and its surrounding areas for the past two days, tea plantation workers have been hard hit. Chinnakallar, Cinchona, Ittiyar Sholayar Dam, Urulikkal, Karumalai, Akkamalai, Vellaimalai, Waverly and Kavarakkal are some of the estate areas that have been receiving heavy rainfall.
The Valparai region receives its first monsoon rains from June onwards and this year's monsoon arrived on June 1, this year. Due to the heavy rains of the past few days as well as on Wednesday morning, the water level of the Sholayar dam has been rising due to the flooding of the Nadumalai river. The water level of Sholayar Dam is 165 feet with a height of 57.50 feet.
The water supply to the dam is 960.42 cubic feet per second and the water reserve in the dam is 5677 TMC with a water level of 1298.64 TMC at present. 429.51 cubic feet of water is discharged to Parambikulam Dam by generating electricity from the dam. Valparai received 25 mm, Chinnakallar received 59 mm, Nirar Dam received 36 mm and Sholayar Dam received 34 mm.
