'Wind farms contribute 30 percent of Tamil Nadu's daily electricity demand:' Kasturirangayan, President of Indian Wind Power Association

Coimbatore: The non-conventional energy generation sector plays a key role in meeting the growing demand for electricity across the country.

According to the wind power sector, there are structures across India that can generate 38,000 MW of electricity. This includes structures to generate 9,500 MW of electricity in Tamil Nadu. The wind power generation season is from the end of May to September, each year.

But for the past few years, the seasons have been setting in early, with the wind power generation season starting in the first week of April, this year as well. Power generation fluctuated due to inconsistent wind speeds. Currently the amount of electricity generated daily is also increasing significantly as the wind speed began to increase from the first week of June.

Kasturirangayan, President of the Indian Wind Power Association (IWPA), said, 'A total of 10,816 million units of electricity were generated during the wind season last year. The amount of electricity generated by wind farms has also increased significantly as speed has begun to increase. In today's environment, an average of 318 million units of electricity are used daily in Tamil Nadu. Of this, 30 percent or 92 million units of electricity is generated from wind farms.

Wind power generation will continue to increase for the next two months. More electricity will be generated in July which is the 'peak season.' The reason here being that the wind blows hard in the Tamil month of Aadi. During such periods, the contribution of wind farms to the total electricity demand of Tamil Nadu increases significantly,' added Kastirirangayan.
