Water level rapidly rising in Sholayar Dam in Valparai
Coimbatore: The Sholayar Dam is the main dam of the Parambikulam Aliyar project in Valparai, Coimbatore district.
It has been raining in Valparai for the last one week and the catchment area of Sholayar Dam continues to receive heavy rainfall in the upper Nirar and lower Nirar areas. As a result, the water level in the dam has risen to 53 feet today from just two feet two weeks ago. As of 6 am today 81 mm rainfall was recorded in Upper Nirar, 60 mm of rainfall was recorded in the Lower Nirar Dam, 40 mm in the Sholayar Dam area and 46 mm in Valparai.
Sholayar Dam receives 960 cubic feet of water and discharges 429.53 cubic feet of water from the dam for power generation. The water level in the 165 feet high dam is 53.10 feet. The Sholayar Dam is expected to fill up as soon as it continues to rain in the Valparai area. Public works officials are constantly monitoring the dam for its water levels.
