Echoing the sentiments of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) against the opening of liquor selling TASMAC outlets in a few districts in the state, is E. R. Eswaran, General Secretary of the Kongunadu Makkal Desia Katchi (KMDK).
Echoing the sentiments of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) against the opening of liquor selling TASMAC outlets in a few districts in the state, is E. R. Eswaran, General Secretary of the Kongunadu Makkal Desia Katchi (KMDK).
Raising concerns over the announcement of opening up of the state run liquor selling outlets in 27 districts in Tamil Nadu as part of state-wide relaxation of lockdown rules, the KMDK leader raised concerns stating that the people who are dwelling in the 11 districts where TASMAC outlets will be shut as part of lockdown norms will travel to the 27 districts where the liquor selling outlets will be functional. Thus, this can result in a spike in covid cases in the state.
The KMDK General Secretary also raised concerns about liquor being sold in the black market in the districts where the TASMAC outlets will remain shut as part of the lock down norms. The concern was raised in the backdrop of the state seeing a decline in the number of people tested positive for the COVID-19 virus.
It may be noted that the Tamil Nadu government announced that the lockdown will be extended in the state till 21 June. Considering the drop in the number of cases in a few districts, the state government has announced relaxations that will be applicable in 27 districts. As part of the relaxations, the ruling DMK government in power has granted permission for the functioning of the state-run liquor selling TASMIC outlets between 10 am and 5 pmin select districts of the state.
Following this announcement, the BJP and the opposition AIADM were quick to react.
The AIADMK took to social media and on its official twitter handle condemning the ruling government. “The government should shut down TASMAC liquor shops. Are TASMAC shops required while people are dying of infection? Do not open TASMAC shops that will bring law and order problems and affect the lives of people.’ MK Stalin, you raised these slogans last year, so what is your answer now?" the tweet read.
This was followed with another tweet that read "After knowing the role of TASMAC in spreading coronavirus and that it is inhumane to reopen them, why is Stalin permitting to reopen the shops? To affect whose lives?”
