Coimbatore: Gold price continues to rise despite closure of jewellery shops during lockdown.

Coimbatore: The price of gold continues to rise despite closure of jewellery shops due to the Covid-19 second wave lockdown. The production and sale of gold jewellery came to a standstill for the past one month owing to the lockdown enforced in Coimbatore as a precautionary measure against further spread of Covid-19.

In spite of this situation, the price of gold continues to rise. Once again a sovereign has reached Rs. 38,000, which has both surprised and shocked buyers.

Addressing the media, the Coimbatore Gold Jewellers Association President, Muthu Venkatram said, “Jewellery production and sales in all districts of Tamil Nadu have been suspended from May 6 due to the spread of Covid-19. However, the rising price of gold may come as a surprise to people, the main reason being the sharp fall in the value of the US dollar. This is why the price of gold has once again crossed Rs. 38,000 for a sovereign,” he stated.

The price of a sovereign (8 grams) of gold in the Coimbatore market as seen in the last few days in the Coimbatore market:

June 7: Rs 37,800

June 8: Rs 37,960

June 9: Rs 37,880

June 10: Rs 37,800

June 11: Rs 38,040
