All two-wheeler patrol vehicles in city's suburbs to be fitted with GPS within 3 months; Coimbatore SP, Selva Nagaratnam
Coimbatore: In the suburbs of Coimbatore, 10 two-wheeler patrol vehicles with loudspeakers, headlights and a mic were provided to police stations to receive complaints through the police app.
The event was held at the Police Training School premises on Avinashi Road. Coimbatore District Superintendent of Police, Selva Nagaratnam attended and flagged off the operation of the two wheelers.
The District Superintendent of Police, Selva Nagaratnam said, "10 two-wheelers have been provided for major police stations in the suburbs of Coimbatore and steps will be taken to install GPS devices on the two-wheelers within the suburbs, in three months. 50 two-wheelers will soon be operational, with 2 two-wheelers each for 15 large police stations in the suburbs and one two-wheeler each for 20 small and medium-sized police stations."
The SP hoped that this initiative would reduce crime in the suburbs. More than 36 cases have been registered daily and more than 40 people have been arrested for selling alcohol illegally during the curfew. The SP has thus far seized 4 lorries smuggling liquor from Karnataka and confiscated liquor bottles. He also warned that brewing in the suburbs is banned and has prevented the import and sale of liquor from Kerala.
