Samooga Needhi Katchi leader supports petition for Rs. 25 lakhs compensation for sanitary workers in Thondamuthur accident
Coimbatore: The Sanitary Workers Association had filed a petition with the District Collector demanding Rs. 25 lakhs compensation for families of victims of the Boluvampatti road accident and Government employment for one of the families of the deceased.
Nine sanitary workers working under the 100-day employment scheme in the Ikkaraiboluvampatti panchayat under the Thondamuthur union in Coimbatore were killed when two vehicles overturned while crossing the Noyyal bridge on Wednesday, while they were returning home from work. Seven of the workers who sustained grievous injuries were admitted to the Coimbatore Government Hospital.
More than 50 employees of Dr. Ambedkar State Corporation and the Sanitary Workers Association filed a petition with the District Collector, and were led by the Samooga Needhi Katchi leader, Panneer.
Addressing the media, Samooga Needhi Katchi leader Panneer stated that the sanitary workers were working without any security and that it was a mistake to transport sanitary staff in a garbage truck which was an act of human rights violation. He mentioned that the cause of the accident was being cited as a faulty vehicle but the district administration should conduct an inquiry in this regard. He also requested the Collector to ensure the sanitary staff were made permanent workers.
