Coimbatore: The iconic four decade old mosque which is located in Karumbukkadai has turned COVID- 19 guidance and counselling centre.

The second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic has left the medical staff strained and there is an acute shortage of counselling being offered to patients who are suffering from the deadly corona virus. Medical professionals echo the sentiments that if offered counselling, patients will surely gain the strength to fight the virus and its repercussions. As if to make up for lack of medical councillors, Masjidhul Hudha, a mosque in Coimbatore has doubled up a COVID-19 guidance and counselling centre to offer counselling and tele-medicine services to individuals regardless of their age, gender, caste or creed.

It has been a month since this centre is operational on service basis and the response that it continues to receive from the public is overwhelming. An initiative of Jamaat – e – Islami – Hind (JeIH) and Students Islamic Organisation of India (SIO), the project is backed by a team of committed volunteers who work on a service basis.

“Individuals can walk into the centre and experts offer counselling on all days between 9 am and 10 pm. Those who are in need of medical help are connected to doctors as part of our tele-medicine initiative.”Abdul Hakeem, Public Relations Officer, JeIH told SimpliCIty. From bringing out a youth who developed suicidal tendencies to putting a COVID-19 woman victim back on her feet, the centre has successfully counselled and has offered tele-medicine services to hundreds of people for free of cost till date.

Besides this, volunteers at the centre also help needy covid patients get admission at the Government Hospital and ESI Hospital. The centre provides patients with real time data of availability of the various categories of beds at the government-run hospitals. Volunteers of the centre are involved in sourcing and delivering O2 cylinders to the door step of the needy patients who cannot afford one.
