Moved by the plight of thousands of people who are not able to afford to feed their family on one hand and saddened by the helplessness of covid patients who are in home quarantine and are unable to access quality food, due to the corona virus, the Coimbatore chapter of the Sevabharathi Trust, taking stock of the hardship that thousands of people are going through in our city, has undertaken the mammoth task of preparing, packing and delivering quality, nutritious meals three times a day to the door step of the needy.
Moved by the plight of thousands of people who are not able to afford to feed their family on one hand and saddened by the helplessness of covid patients who are in home quarantine and are unable to access quality food, due to the corona virus, the Coimbatore chapter of the Sevabharathi Trust, taking stock of the hardship that thousands of people are going through in our city, has undertaken the mammoth task of preparing, packing and delivering quality, nutritious meals three times a day to the door step of the needy. This activity the trust has been doing since the second wave of the covid pandemic hit the city.
The food is prepared in the campus of the Sevabharathi Trust home which runs a home for destitute home for minor boys in R S Puram. In between overseeing activities of the ambitious project Mr. R. Ramanathan who serves as President of the trust, who is surrounded by his team of dedicated and hard working volunteers shares with SimpliCity “The doors of our kitchen open as early as 2.30 every morning. Adhering to all covid protocols work to start preparing breakfast begins. After breakfast is cooked, packed and delivered, we prepare lunch and dinner and ensure that it reaches the patients and beneficiaries on time every time.”
As many as 1,200 healthy nutritious meals are readied in the open kitchen of the Sevabharathi Trust on all seven days a week. Breakfast, lunch and dinner is prepared from Monday to Sunday on a rotation basis menu. While the kitchen staff prepares the meals, another set of volunteers are involved in packing the meals and a team of men is involved in delivering the meals. It may be noted that the meals are delivered within an hour of being cooked.
The meals are delivered to people dwelling in containment zones, hospitals, covid care centers, guest workers and to families who cannot afford a meal.
Apart from being involved in delivering cooked meals to needy beneficiaries, the Sevabharathi Trust is funding 300 beds at the Covid Care Center in Kongunadu Arts and Science College at Coimbatore. The beds include O2 beds. Medical expenses of the patients who are undergoing treatment at the Covid Care Center are taken care of by the trust. Sevabharathi Trust has also donated oxygen concentrators to the covid care facility when there was an acute shortage of oxygen for treating patients who are suffering from the corona virus.
The trust is considering the option of purchasing an ambulance as part of one of its future projects.
