Following this, the Tamil Nadu government has ordered the coronavirus test for the domesticated elephants kept in Topslip and Mudumalai by the Tamil Nadu Forest Department.
Wildlife veterinary team took samples including mucus for coronavirus testing for 28 elephants at the Topslip Kozhikamuthi Elephant Camp near Pollachi yesterday. Samples taken from elephants are sent to the Indian Veterinary Research Station in the state of Uttar Pradesh.
Tamil Nadu Forest Minister Ramachandran, who visited the Kozhikamuthi Elephant Camp in the Topslip area, personally inspected the coronavirus samples taken for elephants. He then asked the doctors about the coronavirus test of the elephants.
Later, Minister Ramachandran told reporters that the coronavirus test was being carried out considering the safety of the elephants being maintained by the forest department on the orders of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin. He said that if coronavirus infection was confirmed in the elephants, action would be taken to isolate and treat the elephants.
