The renowned Ooty Government Botanical Garden was established in 1848 by McIver from England. Work on the park began in 1848 with trees brought in from many countries and work was completed in 1867. For about 19 years, McIver worked tirelessly to establish the state botanical garden. He died of natural causes on June 8, 1876.
Every year on his Memorial Day, a wreath is laid at his grave at St. Stephen's Church in Ooty on behalf of the district administration and the Department of Horticulture.
Today, on the occasion of his 145th birth anniversary, District Collector Innocent Divya, Associate Director of Horticulture and officials paid floral tributes. A special memorial service was later conducted at St.Stephen's Church in Ooty.
