Traders request authorities to allow snacks shops and roadside vendors to operate in Coimbatore
Coimbatore: Even as the Tamil Nadu government announced various relaxations during the additional lockdown imposed for this week across Tamil Nadu, 11 districts including Coimbatore, Tirupur and Salem will continue to witness severe restrictions along with the relaxations.
Apart from these 11 districts, other districts have been given permission to open hardware stores and automobile shops. In 11 districts, including Coimbatore, only grocery stores, meat shops, restaurants, vegetable shops, fruit stalls and essentials are allowed to operate along with only roadside vendors who sell only vegetables and fruits.
Coimbatore District Roadside and Pedestrian Merchants Union, President Mani said, "There are more than 12,000 roadside vendors in the areas under the Coimbatore Corporation alone, with over 20,000 roadside vendors throughout the district. They mostly trade vegetables, basil, fruits and snacks. The livelihood of the roadside traders have been completely affected due to the complete lockdown. As permission has been granted to sell vegetables and fruits, snack shops too should be allowed to operate by adhering to Covid-19 preventive measures."
