Chennai: Reacting swiftly to Prime Minister Modi's address to the nation this evening on Covid-19 vaccination drive, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, M.K. Stalin has requested the PM that each state to be given complete control of registration, validation and administration procedures of the vaccination.

Recalling PM"s statement in which he said "Health is a State subject" and that the Central Government will procure vaccines for all states which will be administered to all people above 18 years of age free of cost, the TN CM in a statement said "I welcome

the PMO India's statement indicating that the Union Government will procure 75% of the vaccines produced in the country and provide them to the states free of cost. I also appreciate the Prime Minister for reversing his government's previous position."

He added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi stressed multiple times in his remarks that Health is a state subject, it would be appropriate for each state to be given complete control of registration, validation and administration procedures of the vaccination.

Earlier, the Centre alloted nearly 1.1 crore doses of the vaccine. After giving administering 96.74 lakh (and excluding wastage), the state was left with the 1.52 lakh doses till last Sunday which as of today stands mostly depleted. The Tamil Nadu government of getting vaccine through a global tender did jot yield result as there were no takers till 11am on Saturday, the last day for tender submission.

With no bidders, the state government have now wait for the central supply or buy directly from manufacturers — Serum Institute of India and Bharat Biotech.
