Coimbatore ranked 7th as the most liveable city in India, as per the recently released Ease of Living Index 2020

Coimbatore: With an overall score of 59.72, Coimbatore is declared as the 7th best liveable city in the county in the ease of living category of cities with a population of over a million. The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), Government of India recently announced the Ease of Living (EOLI) 2020 list for Indian cities and the Municipal Performance Index (MPI) 2020. 

As many as 111 cities participated in the assessment exercise. The EoLI list 2020 and MPI 2020 were made official by Hardeep Singh Puri, Minister of State (Independent Charge), Housing and Urban Affairs at a virtual event.

The respective participating cities were analysed and were ranked and results were announced under the two categories, namely with a population of less than a million people and with a population of more than a million people along with all the cities under the Smart Cities Programme.

The EoLI is regarded as a tool to determine the quality of life and to ascertain the impact of various urban development initiatives. Through a citizen perception survey, the assessment involves residents’ opinions on the various services that are provided by the city administration. Thus, it is just to conclude that the EoLI gives a clear picture of the economic stability, quality of life, long-term sustainability and resilience that is prevalent in the participating cities. The participating cities were ranked based on documents submitted by the respective civic bodies to the MoHUA who inturn analysed and scrutinised them based on a plethora of parameters. The cities were analysed on about 49 indicators under 13 parameters.

Where Coimbatore stands in the Ease of Living Index 2020

·         With an overall score of 59.72, Coimbatore is at 7th position in the Ease of living category.

·         With a score of 60.33, Coimbatore is on 2nd position in the Quality of Life index.

·         With a score of 32.48, Coimbatore stands behind the state capital Chennai in the Economic Stability Index.

·         With an overall score of 80.30, Coimbatore is on 10th position in the citizens’ opinion poll on the services provided by the district administration.

More good news for the state of Tamil Nadu as Chennai is ranked 4th and Coimbatore is on 7th place In the cities with a population of over one million. In cities with a population of less than one million, Salem and Vellore are ranked on 5th and 6th position respectively and Trichy is on 10th place in the list. While Bengaluru in Karnataka is declared as best big liveable city (in the category of over one million people), in which as many as 49 cities participated, Shimla in Himachal Pradesh came first in the category of cities with a population of less than a million in which 62 cities participated.

In the rankings of the Municipal Performance Index (MPI) list, Indore topped the list, followed by Surat and Bhopal in the cities with a population of million plus. In the category of cities with less than one million people, New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) emerged as the leader, followed by Tirupati and Gandhinagar. 

In order to rank the cities as part of the MPI, the performance of the 111 municipalities of the cities were assessed individually. While Delhi was assessed separately, the municipalities of the other cities were analysed based on 5 verticals, under the services, finance, policy, technology and governance parameters, which were in turn broken down into 20 sectors and 100 indicators.
