Periyanayakanpalayam flyover work: unsafe for people; Request to take action before casualties occur
Coimbatore, June 6: Accidents are likely to take place in the Periyanayakanpalayam area near Coimbatore due to unsafe work. The people of the area have demanded that the highway department officials take action before any casualties occur.
Construction of 1.4 km flyover from Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya to Samichettipalayam section at Periyanayakanpalayam on Coimbatore-Mettupalayam road at a cost of about Rs. 85 crore is underway. For this, occupants along the road near LMW near Periyanayakanpalayam section to the Samichettipalayam section have been cleared of roadside trees and now the construction work of the flyover is in full swing.
Giant pits have been dug to erect pillars at the LMW section Periyanayakanpalayam bus stand and Samichettipalayam section. In which, the work of erecting the pillars from the LMW section area to Samichettipalayam is in full swing.
In the meanwhile the places where the giant pits were dug have been left over very carelessly and proper security arrangements were not made. All the vehicles go near and around these giant pits. But the barriers near many giant pits were not set up adequately. There is no accident at present due to lack of vehicular traffic in the curfew. Residents in the area complain that accidents are more likely to occur when vehicular traffic increases.
According to the people of the area, 'the work on the Periyanayakanpalayam flyover continues unabated. Giant pits were dug but the barriers were not set up properly. There is a risk of vehicles falling into giant pits. Also the dust road is spreading as the service road is not paved. We need to take action before there is an accident and there are casualties'.
An official of the National Highways Department denied and said, 'The work on the Periyanayakanpalayam flyover is being carried out with adequate security. Steps will be taken to complete the above tasks expeditiously. Construction of service roads has started. Giant pits were dug for the construction of the pillars. Concrete has been laid for the pillars in various places and the pits have been closed,' he said.
