It is our duty to uphold social justice! - Chief Minister MK Stalin's announcement on NEET
Coimbatore: Chief Minister MK Stalin has announced that a high-level panel headed by retired Justice AK Rajan is being set up to recommend to the government the legal implications of NEET selection, the vulnerabilities it has created so far, and ways to rectify them and said it was his duty to uphold social justice
In a statement issued by Chief Minister MK Stalin on the impact of NEET examination on admission of medical students in Tamil Nadu,
'Many academics have been commenting for the last few years that the NEET system of selection introduced by the Union Government has deprived the backward students in our society, such as rural and urban poor students, students studying in government schools, and students studying in Tamil medium in our society. In view of this, the Government of Tamil Nadu has continued to wage a number of legal battles, urging the abandonment of this extensive system of selection against social justice and the filling of medical college seats only on the basis of Class 12 final examination marks, as per the law passed during their tenure.
Tamil Nadu has always had a historic duty to uphold social justice. In order to continue to fulfill this obligation, the Government is committed to take all necessary steps to remove the vulnerabilities caused by the NEET selection process. A committee will study to afull extent to which this extended selection system has affected disadvantaged students in the community over the past few years. Also the government can devise and enforce all applicable student enrollment methods as an alternative to this system, and the legal mechanisms behind them. A high-level committee comprising academics and relevant officials will be set up under the chairmanship of retired Justice AK Rajan to make recommendations'.
