1,524 litres of foreign liquor and 42 criminals arrested in a week on orders of Railway Police Director C Sylendra Babu
Coimbatore: A two-week complete lockdown had been declared across Tamil Nadu, including Coimbatore with sale of liquor also being prohibited.
During this period, following a tip-off that liquor was being smuggled by train from Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, Railway Police personnel were stationed on these railway routes on the orders of the Director of the Railway Police, C Sylendra Babu. A letter was sent on May 27 to all railway stations for Railway Police personnel to be vigilant.
From May 24 to May 30, police were constantly monitoring trains to check if alcohol was being smuggled through trains. It is reported that 50 smuggling incidents took place with 1,524. 25 litres of state liquor bottles being seized and 42 offenders arrested. All these bottles of liquor have been handed over to the respective District Prohibition Police.
The Railway Police have been asked to report further such incidents at railway stations, by calling 1512 and 99 62 500 500. These numbers are also to be displayed at all train stations and train compartments. C Sylendra Babu also lauded the Railway Police for their swift action in apprehending the culprits.
