Coimbatore: To commemorate May 31 as 'World No Tobacco Day,' Sri Ramakrishna Hospital organised an event.
In a press release issued by the Hospital, the event was stated to be "a yearly celebration that informs the public on the dangers of using tobacco, business practices of tobacco companies, WHO's strategy to fight the tobacco epidemic and what people around the world can do to claim their right to health and healthy living, and to protect future generations."
"The Member States of the World Health Organization created 'World No Tobacco Day' in 1987 to draw global attention to the tobacco epidemic and the preventable death and diseases it causes. This year’s theme is 'Commit to Quit.' This campaign encourages people to quit tobacco for a healthier life. So, we here at SRIOR have created a novel, first-in-the-world digital awareness platform to create maximum commitment amongst the tech savvy youth and adults," said Dr. P Guhan, Director of Sri Ramakrishna Institute of Oncology and Research (SRIOR) Coimbatore.
"We, at SRIOR have designed a Whatsapp Bot which is an AI (artificial intelligence) driven platform through which people can get the maximum awareness about not only tobacco and related cancers but also 'Covid 19' and its complications, in both English and Tamil languages. All this may seem complicated but the operation is pretty simple. All one needs to do is just save this number +916364578269 and through your WhatsApp, send a 'hi' message, and the BOT will start to communicate with you. Starting from the language selection, then the disease selection, the BOT will take you through a series of awareness videos and facts," he added.
This interactive BOT was made available to the public in a private launch event today at the Sri Ramakrishna Hospital premises by the Managing Trustee, D Lakshminarayanaswamy, and the event was presided by Dean Sukumaran, Dr. P Guhan, Director SRIOR and staff members.
