Seva Bharathi distributes 4800 daily meals during complete lockdown in R S Puram
Coimbatore: The volunteers of Seva Bharathi Sevashram on East Venkataswamy Road in R S Puram are on their toes every single day, in their noble cause of cooking and serving 4800 daily meals during the second Covid-19 wave. People in Coimbatore still remember Seva Bharathi for having served over 10,000 meals per day, during the first lockdown.
1600 people under lockdown reportedly receive their three meals a day owing to the sheer hard work of the Seva Bharathi volunteers. The meals are served at the General Hospital to transgenders and sanitary workers regularly, on a daily basis. 50 percent of the food is reserved for homebound Covid families who are served for 10 days.
Seva Bharathi has now expanded its scope of relief work. They have established a 300-bed Covid relief facility at Kongunad College, this year. The State President, R Ramanathan elaborated on the work being done saying, "The day begins by 6 am for the Covid patients. They are given 100 ml of A2 milk. This is followed by a two-item breakfast by 7.30 am which includes idli and dosa etc. A kashayam or soup is offered by 10.30 am. Lunch consisting of egg and fruit is served by 12 pm.
The food is enriched with items like cloves and cinnamon. Patients are made to eat 'sundal' along with another 100 ml of A2 milk by 4 pm. The dinner at 7.30 pm comprises two items which includes chappatti or poori. A total of 25 volunteers and a medical team consisting of 35 doctors and nurses are present on the spot. Medicines are offered free of cost. Equipment like the BP kit, Pulse Oximeter etc. are always kept available along with an oxygen facility bus in the premises. Of course, there are Oxygen Concentrators too," he added.
"Our team works night and day. All volunteers are up by 5 am and work until 11 pm. The volunteers work for a week and are then quarantined by Seva Bharathi for two weeks. They stay in the facility provided by Seva Bharathi and return to serve. Seva Bharathi has offered 40 volunteers in the General Hospital and 30 volunteers in the ESI Hospital. The PPE kits, tissue paper and surgical gloves are a part of 150 items which are kept in stock for serving Covid patients. Now there is a need for about 20 Pulse Oxymeters for the Kongunad College center," said R Ramanathan.
R Ramanathan and a few of his team members have not been to their homes for some time now. They lead a frugal life in Sevashram. "Seva Bharathi is serving through about 17,000 centres all over our country. There are small and big centres, numbering 400 in Tamil Nadu alone. While about 10 centres are similar to the one at Kongunad College, the rest are smaller facilities. The smaller facilities offer assistance to smaller groups of patients. The task ahead is huge. Let us put our efforts together in order to offer succour to the people.
