Cheran Ma Nagar residents throw caution to the winds by flouting every lockdown rule
Coimbatore: Cheran Ma Nagar has been witnessing a complete violation of lockdown rules ever since it was announced by the Government and district authorities, with vegetable vendors and flower stalls operating as usual in the area, and with people moving around in vehicles, both during morning and evening due to lack of police surveillance.
Cheran Ma Nagar is located on Vilankurichi Road and is the residential area for Government Transport Corporation employees. There are a total of 568 houses in 3 categories - A, B and C. Apart from this, there are several thousand flats in the surrounding areas of Cheran Ma Nagar.
Ravi Shankar, President of the Consumer Awareness and Protection Association said, "Cheran Ma Nagar and the surrounding residential areas are part of the 32nd Ward of the Corporation and violations have been rampant in these areas since the curfew was imposed. Vegetable stalls are being set up and sold as usual at various places in Cheran Ma Nagar residential areas since only mobile vegetable vehicles run by the Corporation are given telephone numbers to contact them. Apart from selling flowers, they also set up shops on the road. Apart from this, grocery stores are operating as usual at various places, including the department store near the last bus stop in Cheran Ma Nagar. Every day from morning till evening, people come and go as usual on two-wheelers and four-wheelers."
"On top of all this, many bakery shops in various areas including the ones at the fourth stop, the fifth stop and the main road are closed, but tea and snacks are sold as usual in the morning and evening in front of these bakeries. Thus it is customary for people to go in groups and sit in front of the shops drinking tea and eating snacks while chatting. Apart from these activities, many people are moving around as usual on the roads and in public places, using the excuse of exercising and walking, both in the mornings and evenings," added Ravi Shankar.
"Corporation officials and police should take appropriate action to monitor and take action against such irregularities found in Cheran Ma Nagar's residential areas. A police check post should be set up and intensive surveillance work ought to be carried out in these areas to implement Covid-19 safety measures."
