Coimbatore: With regular flights from India to foreign countries banned, only some foreign flights are operated to India.

Apart from this, special flights are being operated on behalf of Air India under the 'Vande Bharat' scheme under the guidance of the Central Government for the return of Indians residing in various parts of the world.

Coimbatore International Airport regularly operates flights to Singapore, Sri Lanka and Sharjah.

Due to the spread of coronavirus infection, only Air Arabia currently operates flights between Coimbatore and Sharjah. A total of 70 tonnes of goods have been transported from Coimbatore in May to date. Airport sources said, “Air Arabia was offering service two days a week earlier this month. Airline service was often canceled due to the low number of passengers. Thus only one flight has been operated for the last two weeks.

So far this month, 70 tonnes of goods have been shipped. Mostly only vegetables, snacks food items, oil and flowers were overbooked. Travelers can reach Coimbatore only from Sharjah. Passengers are not allowed on the return flight from Coimbatore to Sharjah.

Thus the aircraft carried 6 to 7 tons of cargo each time it returned. It is noteworthy that a maximum of 3 or 3.5 tons of cargo can be carried if there are passengers, said airport sources.
