165 vehicles dispatched to deliver fruits and vegetables door-to-door in Coimbatore: Corporation Commissioner
Coimbatore: Kumaravel S Pandian, the Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner held a press conference on Wednesday at the Wholesale Vegetable Purchase Market located on Mettupalayam Road, Coimbatore.
With a complete lockdown declared by the Government of Tamil Nadu, people's daily necessities such as vegetables, fruits etc.were decided to be made available door-to-door without any hindrance. Action was taken on Tuesday morning and vehicles organized on behalf of the Ministry of Food and Civil Supply and the Ministry of Forests launched the initiative led by the Corporation.
Following this, permission was given to private vendors from 9 am on Tuesday and arrangements were made to go door-to-door and sell vegetables and fruits. The Corporation Commissioner elaborated that from Tuesday night, with the aim of bringing vegetables and fruits from other districts, traders were contacted and all vegetables and fruits were brought in on Tuesday night. He added that the required amount of fruits and vegetables had been stocked and dispatched to all locations this morning in 165 private vehicles.
"In addition, vegetables have been dispatched in 70 vehicles owned by the Corporation and from Uzhavar Sandhai. The purpose is to ensure that prices do not rise under any circumstances. Farmers from other districts havebrought their produce into the city for selling," said the Corporation Commissioner. He also added that they are continuing to take appropriate action by advising officials so that prices do not rise in any way.
