Coimbatore: A shocking revelation has come to light that the Tamil Nadu Drinking Water and Drainage Board and local bodies have outstanding electricity bills in billions.
N R Ravishankar, President, Consumer Awareness and Protection Association (CAPA) said, “On behalf of our Association, under the Right to Information Act, 9 November 2020, have asked local bodies and Tamil Nadu Drinking Water and Drainage Board, Tamil Nadu Electricity Generating and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) in 9 zones (Chennai North, Chennai South, Coimbatore, Madurai, Tirunelveli, Vellore, Trichy, Villupuram, Erode) for details of outstanding electricity bills for the period from January 1, 2015 to October 31, 2020.
Apart from the Erode region, the remaining 8 zones have also sent information. Accordingly, the Tamil Nadu Drinking Water and Drainage Board owes Rs.1127,87,34,655 crores and there are outstanding electricity bills payable on behalf of local bodies amounting to Rs.1700,95,89,531 crores with a total electricity outstanding of Rs.2828,83,24,186 crores. The Tamil Nadu Minister for Electricity, V Senthilbalaji should take appropriate action to expedite the collection of all arrears,” he emphasized.
