Nilgiris Mountain Railway train does a test run with new compartments

The Nilgiris: The renowned Nilgiris Mountain Railway train spruced up with new compartments had a test run between Coonoor and Mettupalayam. The train's 28 compartments have been replaced by new compartments manufactured at the Chennai ICF factory. Four compartments were brought from Mettupalayam to Coonoor for the initial test run.

The compartments have been fitted with large mirrors on both sides to enable passengers to easily enjoy the view of the waterfall and the picturesque scenery. The NMR is scheduled to do a test run with the new compartments on May 25 and 26 and will soon be open to tourists who are awaiting the new train with much anticipation.

Since 1908, people have been travelling through the single track railway to experience the unique journey through the picturesque mountainside. The exclusive toy train was built by Britishers who travelled to the magnificent hill station seeking relief from the heat to enjoy its salubrious weather.

The 1000mm gauge railway slowly ascends the Nilgiri hills, moving through tunnels and curves and offering its passengers a ride they would cherish for a lifetime. The one track railway in India runs from Mettupalayam to Ooty scaling an elevation of 326m to 2203m in a time span of five hours. Travelling by Nilgiri Mountain Railway is a vacation in itself as the enticing long journey promises the opportunity to witness panoramic views in abundance.
