Modern machinery boosts tea harvest in Valparai tea estates

Tea harvest gets a fillip with modern machinery in tea estates at Valparai

Coimbatore: About 50,000 acres of tea are cultivated in Valparai in Coimbatore. These tea estates employ not only people from Tamil Nadu but also workers from Kerala, Assam, Jharkhand and West Bengal. Due to current summer rains, the climatic conditions are conducive for a good harvest of tea this year.

The tea plantation management which has actively been involved in the production of tea used to employ over 10,00,000 workers for the tea estates in Valparai. Currently, only about 50,000 workers have been employed which has hampered the tea-picking process. To avoid this, the tea plantation management has resorted to harvesting tea with modern machinery and less human labour.

The machinery has resulted in five people completing the work that normally takes 30 people to complete. This has helped a great deal in tiding through the pandemic period when labour is scarce.
