As the number of fresh Covid cases continue to increase steadily in the State while the manpower in healthcare facilities deteriorate, the Director of Medical and Rural Health Service appointed as many as 1212 contract nurses on regular time scale of pay to battle the public health emergency arisen out of the second wave of Covid-19.

The appointment also comes after the Tamil Nadu Government Assembly election result was announced and right after DMK’s Chief and Chief Minister designate of Tamil Nadu M K Stalin announced media professionals as frontline workers, besides meeting Health Department officials on Monday to discuss about controlling the Covid second wave.
“In order to tackle the present situation and the threat of Covid-19 pandemic which is increasing in the state of Tamil Nadu and projected persons requiring hospitalisation and management being on the rise, and to meet the demand for the period ahead, it is ideal to employ additional nurses particularly in Chennai,” stated the order.
Saying that the decision was drawn after the high level meeting held with the Director of Medical Education in Teynampet in Chennai, the order also directed nurses to report before the Director of Medical Education (DME) for issuance of necessary placement in Chennai city as per requirements.
“They are to discharged immediately from the contract post on 05-05-2021 and should be relieved from the present station on 05-05-2021 without fail,” added the order issued by the Director of Medical and Rural Health Service.
However, the date of joining duty at the office of Director of Medical Education will be considered as the deemed date of joining in the regular post. The order further instructed that strict action shall be taken on anyone who fails to report for duty at the DME office.
It is to be noted that these are the staff nurses that protested during the regime of the ADMK government last year to appoint them as regular basis staff, but ended up being locked inside their toilets in order to prevent them from protesting.
