Overcrowding and chaos prevailed at the Coimbatore Government Arts College on Friday morning even as hundreds of people gathered at the campus to receive their second dose of Covid vaccination.
Coimbatore: Overcrowding and chaos prevailed at the Coimbatore Government Arts College on Friday morning even as hundreds of people gathered at the campus to receive their second dose of Covid vaccination.
Until a week ago, Coimbatore district faced a shortage of vaccines both Covishield and Covaxin. Last Saturday, a consignment of 4 lakh doses -- 2 lakh each of Covishield and Covaxin - reached the district. Since then, the vaccination drive against Covid-19 resumed in the district.
Earlier today, people thronged the Government Arts College campus to receive their respective dose of vaccine at the vaccine centre. A verbal clash ensued due to wrong information of vaccines being in shortage. There was a reported clash between those who were at the centre for their first dose of the vaccine and those who were there for their second dose. People were throwing caution to the wind by violating social distancing norms.
According to the district administration, there are 5,090 vaccines remaining of both Covishield and Covaxin, as of Thursday. Covid-19 cases in the district stand at 900 plus per day in the district.
Following panic and commotion, police arrived to the spot to pacify the crowd.
