Around 12,000 cubic meters of waste disposed so far through bio-mining project at Vellalore landfill in Coimbatore

"As many as 40 tonnes of waste is being cleared daily at the Vellalore landfill through a bio-mining project, leaving only 12,000 cubic meters of unsorted waste into a composite pit." said a corporation official.


Coimbatore: There are 100 wards in Coimbatore Corporation. These wards collect 800 to 1,000 tons of garbage on a daily basis. All the garbage is dumped in a corporation-owned 650-acre landfill in Vellalore.

In one part of the landfill of around 60 acres of land, is were9 lakh metric tons of unsorted garbage is kept. The debris creates a strong stench in the area and the area is infested with flies.

Hence the Coimbatore Corporation authorities decided to dispose of this waste by Bio-mining method. The project was prepared at a cost of Rs 60 crore. The project is being implemented by a private company and up to 40 tonnes of garbage is currently being disposed daily at the Vellalore landfill through the Bio mining Project.

A corporation official source said, "In the first phase of the Bio-mining project, around 9 lakh cubic meters of unsorted waste is planned to be disposed. So far, 12,000 cubic meters of garbage has been cleared and composted, including plastic products and other building waste. A team from Anna University will inspect the disposal site soon to proceed with the second phase of Bio-mining project. " He said.
