Nurses protest at Coimbatore GH demanding appointment of additional staff to tackle Covid-19 patients overload
Coimbatore: With the Covid-19 second wave sweeping across Coimbatore district rapidly, a large number of patients are being admitted to hospitals for treatment.
A shortage of staff nurses and doctors is reported at the Coimbatore Government Hospital which functions now as a Covid-19 treatment center. Most of the nurses working in the Covid-19 wards complain that there are not enough nurses in the wards to treat other patients since the existing nurses are overburdened with the ever-increasing load of Covid-19 patients.
About 50 nurses from Coimbatore Medical College Hospital protested in front of the nurses' quarters located in the hospital premises, demanding the appointment of additional nurses immediately to meet the shortage.
They raised slogans demanding that the workload of the current nurses be reduced.
Thereafter, the nurses also presented their demands to Dr. Nirmala, the Dean of CMCH who intervened to pacify the protesters. Following the Dean's assurance that their demands would be brought to the attention of the Government, the protesting nurses dispersed.
