Public Information Officer who failed provide information to hoseiry worker fined Rs. 25,000

Coimbatore: The State Information Commission has imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on an officer who failed to provide information under the Right to Information Act. Lakshmanan, 58, is a hosiery worker from Arumugampalayam near Palladam in Tirupur district.

He had applied to an Officer in February last year for some documents. But he was not provided with required documents within three months. Thus in May of the same year he applied again for which he gave a lethargic response. He appealed again for a second time in August.

The appeal is usually heard over the phone and no reply has been received to the petition of the applicant for more than one year. State Information Commissioner Pratap Kumar has directed that the information requested by the applicant should be sent by registered post with acknowledgment card free of charge within a week.

A copy of the acknowledgment card was received by the applicant and it was revealed that information was not provided for over a year. The Public Relation Officer who did not provide information to the petitioner was fined Rs 25,000 and disciplinary action will be taken against following the report sent to the State Information Commissioner.
