Coimbatore: MP PR Natrajan in his letter to the administration said that "The second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic is spreading very aggressively. It is a matter of concern that the number of infected people in Coimbatore district is increasing to more than a thousand every day.
Doctors, nurses and health workers, who are the forerunners to cure the infected are working tirelessly. The public will always remember their service with gratitude.
At the same time there is no denying that there is a shortage of doctors, nurses and health workers. There is a risk that the overall medical service will be disrupted if the pioneers who now work around are exhausted due to workload.
At the moment I know the doctors and nurses are under a lot of stress. They demand that they rest for a day or two to work ahead. Their request must be fulfilled immediately taking into account the workload of the staff. Immediate action should be taken to permanently appoint contract workers and cleaners and new staff must be recruited. This will help them to recognize their hard work and help them work with enthusiasm.
Similarly, there are constant complaints that cleaners on contract duty are not paid their wages as fixed by the government. The government provides a fixed wage for those who are working in times of calamity.
Similarly fever camps should be increased. At the same time, people with Covid-19 infections are being admitted to hospitals for treatment. But it is necessary to fully identify the contacts of the infected and break the chain of infection.
But there are doubts whether there is enough interest shown in this matter. Arrangements to pick up those who turn out positive on the test by ambulance were implemented during the last wave. At present, infected people go to the hospital by public transport such as buses and autos as soon as they know the test results. This will further increase the spread of infection. Arrangements should be made to bring the infected person to the hospital by ambulance immediately from the scene.
Places including the ESI hospital, are overcrowded as the number of infected people are on the rise more than a thousand every day. It is said that at present there is a reserve of seven thousand beds. Health department gas predicted that the number is expected to increase further in the coming days. I request the officials to turn hospitals, private and government colleges, hotels and lodged into Covid-19 treatment centers as a precaution.
Also I came to know that there is an insufficiency in the stocks of medicines. This must be checked and actions must be taken to have adequate supply of medicines to avoid scarcity in time of emergencies.
Similarly, private hospitals have entered into agreements with private hotels to provide isolation and treatment in their rooms. Private hospitals are charging for this without proper accounting. Appropriate action should be taken to regularize fees for Covid-19 treatment in private hospitals. A committee must be set-up by the government to monitor this.

Hundreds of volunteers are ready to come forward in Coimbatore district to do such work. We must coordinate with them to face the issue.
