The Sterlite Copper has two Oxygen plants which is closed at present with a capacity for producing 1000 metric tons of Oxygen per day.
Coimbatore: C Balasubramanian, President of the The Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Coimbatore today appealed to the State Government to permit the functioning of Sterlite in Tuticorin.
In the press release it is said that " The Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Coimbatore thanks and appreciates the Tamil Nadu Government for taking stringent measures to control the spread of Covid 19.
The present situation for the availability of Oxygen is very critical. Due to non-availability of Oxygen, patients particularly Covid-19 patients lost their lives not only in TamilNadu but in Northern States which is heavy in numbers.
We note that Tamil Nadu's current daily Oxygen manufacturing capacity of 400 metric tons and 20 metric tons of capacity are available in industries. But these industries lack licence to make medical Oxygen.
The State Government recently informed the Madras High Court the current usage of Oxygen is to the extent of 250 metric tons a day and that it has a storage capacity of 1167 metric tons.
It is learnt that the State Government requires 450 metric tons to make available adequate Oxygen because of the high number of Oxygen dependent Covid-19 cases.
We also learn that the Industry Department of Tamil Nadu Government is closely working with Oxygen producers to augment capacity by providing whatever clearances they require and the department is also trying to identify the land and getting consent to establish the plant.
In this grooming situation the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Coimbatore appeals to the Government to permit Sterlite Plant at Tuticorin to commence its operation for production of Oxygen.

When many States are reeling under a shortage of Oxygen to treat Covid patients, Tamil Nadu at present is blessed with Tuticorin Sterlite Plant.
We also would like to point out that last week Chief Justice of Supreme Court of India Shri S A Bobde had voiced anguish of the Supreme Court at the state's objection to re-open the Sterlite Plants at Tuticorin. He also quoted that "Let us not care who operates the plant but Oxygen must be produced from a capable place".
In the above circumstances, the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Coimbatore on behalf of its Members, Trade, Industry and Service etc, appeals to the State Government to initiate immediate action and open the Sterlite Plants at Tuticorin.
The Government may also convince a section of residents in Tuticorin, regarding the present situation in the State and the importance of Oxygen availability to safeguard the lives of Covid-19 patients.
This action by the Government will really not only save the Covid-19 patients in our State but also other sourcing States by supplying our Oxygen to them which will be in excess.
We once again appeal to the State Government for favourable action in this regard."
