100-year old tree set afire by sudden strike of lightning in Coimbatore
Coimbatore: In the Thondamuthur Nallurvayal area, a tree was struck by lightning and caught fire around midnight. On the road to Kovai Kutralam, on the roadside in Nallurvayal, over a hundred-years old 'Vagai' tree and a 30-year old banyan tree are seen enmeshed on the wayside.
On April 19, around midnight, heavy rains accompanied by lightning and thunder lashed the area and the Vagai tree caught fire. Firefighters rushed to the spot and tried to douse the fire from 3 am to 5 am. After 13 hours of struggle, the burning branch of the tree was cut down and removed.
The lower part of the tree reportedly caught fire again on Monday night. People in the area who witnessed the fire informed the Thondamuthur fire station. The Fire Department reportedly fought for two hours and brought the fire under control. Strangely, the tree caught fire for the third time on Monday morning and firefighters had to once again rush to the spot to douse the fire.
The Highway Department has decided to uproot the tree completely since it tended to catch fire quite regularly. Even as they attempted to uproot, they realised that the roots of the tree were too deep and hence have decided to dig out the bottom part of the tree to uproot it in a day or two.
