The highest single day spike of 1,056 cases on Monday paints the grim picture of a humanitarian crisis unfolding, slowly yet steadily. Though it has just been a few days since Coimbatore district cried over the shortage of vaccines, it now looks like the district has to deal with the backfire of the highest spike that has to be immediately curbed, besides ensuring vaccines for all. However, while there are sufficient oxygen and ventilator-supported beds according to the Health Department officials, the aftermath of daily spike in cases is looming large.
In a step to control the spread of the virus, the State Government had beefed up safety measures against Covid-19 which included night curfew, limiting the function of specified shops and a full-day lockdown on Sundays. Even the overall turnout for Covid-19 vaccination on Sunday was low compared to other days owing to the full-day curfew.
But the steep increase in Covid-19 cases is proving without doubt that this curve is far steeper than the first one of last year which in turn could also be devastating for the district. Besides this, the number of beds in hospitals are overflowing in the district, even though health department officials refuse to accept it.
Sources in Government treatment facilities admit that beds are filling faster. SimpliCity spoke to Dr. Nirmala, CMCH Dean to confirm the fact and was told that the hospital is arranging a few more beds to admit more patients. Over 840 beds have been filled to date.
In private hospitals, the scenario is no different. SimpliCity had already reported that these hospitals are only admitting patients in general wards, in beds without oxygen and ventilator support and not in ICU or Covid wards. With most of the public unable to afford admissions to private hospitals, their desperate pleas to avail a bed in Government treatment facilities too go unheeded since there are no extra beds available.
Given the eerie scenario of hospitals choking, fraudsters are making hay while the sun shines. Projecting themselves to be hospital attendants who wish to help, some have demanded hefty amounts from patients at ESI hospital in the pretext of providing quality food and accommodation in return. The miscreants were later suspended.
Doctors have pleaded with the public to avoid unnecessarily stepping out of their homes which could contain the spread of the virus. Unable to tackle the situation, the Central Government reached out to its citizens on Monday, requesting them to wear masks inside their own homes too, so as not to be contagious.
The total number of cases in the district stands at 74,288, while active cases are at 6,689 and 716 deaths thus far. As many as 66,883 patients have reportedly been discharged.
