Coimbatore Islamic Organization members petition Coimbatore District Collector seeking permission for special prayers at mosques during Ramadan

Coimbatore: With the second wave of Covid-19 ravaging many parts of the nation, the Tamil Nadu government has imposed new restrictions from Monday especially on all banned religious places of worship in particular.

Members of the Islamic community had already petitioned the Coimbatore District Collector, S Nagarajan for permission to allow them to perform special prayers at night during the month of Ramadan, as an exception to the restrictions that are already in place to curb the spread of Covid-19.

The recent ban on worship has distressed Muslims especially during the month of Ramadan. Last year due to Covid-19 they were unable to engage in special worship. The Sunnat Jamaat Federation said it was deeply saddened by the situation this year.

Regular prayers at the mosque for Ramadan were underway in strict compliance to Covid-19 protocols like compulsory face masks, social distancing and regular temperature checks for the worshippers. Also, all prayers concluded before 10 pm as per the restrictions of the Tamil Nadu government.

A petition has now been filed with the District Collector in Coimbatore by the members of the Coimbatore District Sunnat Jamaat Federation to consider the sentiments of the Islamists and allow special prayers in accordance with Government regulations for Ramadan.
