Innovation: Oxygen recycling medical equipment produced in Coimbatore can deliver up to 30 patients with the same oxygen level as 1 patient - Ravi Ganesh, Surabhi Biomedical

Surabhi Biomedical and Instrumentation company is all set to manufacture and supply bulk requirements on demand by the government.

Coimbatore: Oxygen demand has increased significantly due to the rapid increase in the spread of Covid-19 infection in India. To help cope with this crisis situation, a recycled oxygen-using 'BiPAP' medical device is being manufactured in Coimbatore.

In this regard, Surabi Biomedical Instrumentation Industry in Coimbatore, MD Ravi Ganesh in a special interview said that "I am a native of Coimbatore and studied Biomedical Engineering at IIT Mumbai. I have started a medical equipment manufacturing company in Coimbatore. We are making an ultrasound scanner medical device called Surabi. We have received an award from the late former President Abdul Kalam.

We have been working to make our medical equipment available to the people of the community since the first wave of the spread of the disease. As a result, we are currently producing and selling 'BiPAP' equipment that uses recycled oxygen. This technology, which can be called 'REBREATHER', is used in places including scuba diving, anesthesia ventilator and the International Space Station.

But, so far this technology has not been used in treatment for Covid-19 in India. By using this technology we can save a lot of oxygen. Thirty patients can be oxygenated by using this device at the level of oxygen currently given to one patient. This is the uniqueness of this medical device.

Our equipment was subjected to medical tests. So considering the current situation we are ready to manufacture and supply bulk equipment if the government so desires. To date we have sold around 20 pieces of equipment. The price of this equipment is 1.5 lakh rupees. The use of oxygen in the recycling system results in greater savings. Seeing that, the price of medical equipment will not have a big impact.

Inquiries for orders were very low due to lack of awareness about the equipment. But in recent days we have started getting more inquiries." he said.
