Coimbatore businesses face ban for selling oxygen cylinders to industries; Warned of their licenses being cancelled if caught violating the ban
Coimbatore: The industrial city of Coimbatore supplies more than 10,000 cubic meters of oxygen daily. Oxygen supply to industries had been cut off due to the spread of Covid-19. The Government had issued orders for industries to supply oxygen only to hospitals, without any hindrances.

S Surulivel, President of the Railway Suppliers Association (RASA) said, "Industrial companies use a variety of gases including oxygen, carbon dioxide and nitrogen. However, only oxygen cylinders are used for laser cutting and fabrication work. Businesses are currently banned from supplying oxygen due to the spread of Covid 19. To avoid this, the Tamil Nadu Government had instructed the manufacturers to supply oxygen only for medical use.
With only about three oxygen production companies in Coimbatore but many dealers, both were warned that their licenses will be revoked if they supply oxygen to companies in violation of the ban due to the ever-increasing demand. Their daily bills were also checked. We welcome the decision to supply oxygen only to hospitals due to Covid-19. However, business development is also important. Hence the Government should take necessary action to make oxygen available for both hospitals and industries. Otherwise the industry will be pushed to bankruptcy," stated the President of RASA.

Sivakumar, President of Coimbatore Tirupur District Micro Enterprise and Rural Entrepreneurs Association (COTMA) also was of the same opinion saying that “Oxygen plays an important role in most of the cutting operations in the industry. Oxygen is also needed to save the lives of human beings in the present scenario and there is no alternative opinion. But the Government should take steps to make oxygen available to companies without hindrance. Otherwise, oxygen shortage will have a major impact on the industry in the coming days."
