Coimbatore: The number of flights operated daily at Coimbatore Airport has been drastically reduced due to the rapid increase of Covid-19 cases in the city.
The Coimbatore International Airport serves the people of Coimbatore and the surrounding 7 districts. The number of passengers travelling by air has dropped significantly due to the spread of the second wave of the pandemic.
The pandemic has made some companies suspend flights to various cities. Apart from that, many companies which are currently operating, do not function regularly. This has led to a decrease in the number of flights.
Coimbatore airport sources said, "Only five flights were operated daily in May last year due to the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic. The number was later considerably increased to 20 flights operated daily in the past few months.
Due to the second wave of Covid-19 pandemic, some airlines that have been providing services from Coimbatore to various cities have temporarily suspended their service as a response to curfew in places like Delhi and Mumbai."
The source also said, "This has severely affected the air traffic. Coimbatore International Airport handles only 10 flights daily. In just a few days the number increases to 12. Aircraft movement will only increase if the spread of infection is reduced. It must be noted that 33 to 35 flights were operated daily in Coimbatore before covid."
