He accused the Smart City project in Race Course is done by wasting people's tax money and by deceiving the people
Coimbatore: DMK MLA N Karthik condemned the Smart City project work done in the Race Course area. He said, "In the interest of the public, the Corporation Commissioner should immediately intervene and immediately stop all anti-people activities, including cutting down of trees in the Race Course area."
This became an issue after a community activist alleged that the Smart City project in Race Course has resulted in cutting down of many trees and no rainwater collection systems in the area. Following this, DMK MLA N Karthik asked if it was right to waste people's tax money by working this road which was in good condition for public use and claiming to build a new road again.
In Coimbatore, Minister SP Velumani started work on 12.06.2020 on the Race Course at a cost of about Rs. 40 crore under the Smart City project. "In the name of the Smart City project on the Coimbatore Race Road, trees in the area are being cut down, the size of the roads is being reduced, billboards are being installed and commercialized without consulting environmental activists and the public," said N Karthik.
He accused that the place lost its identity and the purpose for which it was used for walking by the public for over a hundred years. Adding, "Under the leadership of SP Velumani, projects are being carried out hastily by cutting down trees that provide oxygen and clean air, encroach the roads and disrupt the environment for walking, reduce road safety and public parking," he alleged.
N Karthik further said, "The area is being commercialized with many colourful lights and metal structures that are of no use to the thousands of people who use this Race Course every day. The area, which used to be the lungs of Coimbatore, is now lined with artificial metal structures. These actions have created great dissatisfaction among the people of Coimbatore."
He also added, "Arignar Anna's Centenary Festival Parks, Semmozhi Manadu Parks set up with the Corporation's public funds in the Corporation areas of Coimbatore are left unattended without water and without adequate maintenance. The children's play area is rusty and unusable. It would have been beneficial for the people if the above funds had been spent to maintain these parks."
N Karthik alleged that the symbols of Coimbatore are being erased for the selfishness and self-interest of Minister SP Velumani and his benami contractors. "they focus only on corruption scandals, leaving tenders hastily in all the Smart City projects being implemented in Coimbatore, with substandard materials and substandard works being carried out without consulting public," he also said.
Following this, N Karthika also accused the officials of wasting people's tax money. He urged the Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner to immediately intervene in this and stop all anti-people activities including cutting down of trees in the name of Smart City projects in the Race Course road area.
"After May, with the formation of the Coalition government under the leadership of the MK Stalin it will be time for Minister SP Velumani to answer for all his administrative malpractices for his own self-interest, for not thinking about the people and for ignored the malpractices and administrative irregularities in the Coimbatore Smart City project," N Karthik also stated in his press release.
