Coimbatore: Coimbatore International Airport has been a major player in the international air cargo segment along second tier cities. Trichy Airport has now improved it’s performance to a fighting level.
Coimbatore Air Cargo sources said, "After the spread of the Covid-19 disease, the international transport department at the Coimbatore International Airport is providing 5 trips per week to Sharjah. Every trip of this service is housefull.
But this plane usually carries an average of two and a half tons of cargo each time. After the Vishu festival, cargo bookings have dropped significantly. Thus the maximum cargo currently shipped went to one and a half ton.
Also the cargo sent from Coimbatore to other international destinations is now being sent from Trichy Airport. The main reason for this is that more international air service flights are currently being provided from Trichy.
Daily flights to various countries including Singapore, Sharjah, Dubai, Kuala Lumpur and various other international destinations. But there is only 1 International service currently operated from Coimbatore International Airport.
Furthermore the cargo charges in Coimbatore are quite excessive and Trichy airport does that for a low fare. This is one of the major reasons behind Trichy Airport's rise as a new competitor. Coimbatore Airport earlier had disadvantages in the air cargo segment, as the flights from Kerala were connecting more countries.
Coimbatore International Airport must launch new flights to more international destinations. In addition the charge for shipping cargo should be reduced. Above all, we need to expedite the expansion of the Coimbatore International Airport and improve the infrastructure.
