Coimbatore: About 50 cell phones were retrieved and handed over to the respective owners by the Coimbatore District Cyber Crime Police in January this year, in connection to the disappearance of various mobile phones across police stations in Coimbatore.
Another 50 mobile phones were recovered from scammers in the month of February and March and were given to their respective owners today at an event headed by Coimbatore Police Superintendent Selvarathnam.
Additional Superintendent of Cyber Crime Sangu, Inspector Loganathan and Inspector Jayadevi presided over this event. Cyber Crime Branch SI Mahendran with the help of Velusamy, Maheshkumar and Vijayakumar handed over these mobile phones to their owners.
SP Selvarathinam addressed the gathering and said "A lot of scams are happening in recent times by asking customers to update their ATM card and telling that their credit card limit has been increased by asking the public to share their OTP number. Another scam is a fake call pretending to be from a cell phone company asking for space to set up a mobile tower, for which we will pay a large sum of rent per month, like an advance of Rs 10 lakh."
He also alerted the public and said, "There is another scam going on where pictures of your close relatives are taken from Facebook, Instagram etc and their pictures are kept as DP's for messengers when the scammer is pretending to ask you for money for an immediate medical emergency. Some claim to provide government jobs, work at airports or give an instant loan in return for important details Aadhar Number, PAN card, bank passbook for details."
SI Selvarathinam said that yet another new scam is making its rounds where a person pretends to be military personnel, shares pictures of gadgets, bikes and other items on the OLX platform. "An assurance is given to send the product via courier once the advance amount is paid. Post the transfer of cash, the fake id cannot be traced," he said.
The Police SI Selvarathnam then advised the public not to share their personal details with strangers. He also urged the public to file a complaint immediately or within 2 hours at a nearby police station if they fall for any scams.
