Due to the sudden heavy rains yesterday, the wall collapses causing panic in public.
Coimbatore: The collapse of a 12-foot high compound wall built on the banks of the Ukkadam Periyakulam lake has caused fear among the people of the area. It is built under the Smart City project near the Coimbatore Karumbukkadai, Cheran Nagar.
Under the Smart City project, Coimbatore has received various infrastructure plans and work has been going on. Model roads, streetlights, street layouts are set up in many places and are in use by the people. Under the project, parks have been set up especially near the water bodies and lakes in Coimbatore. Various reconstructions have been carried out such as boat riding facilities, decorative lights, pavement and perimeter wall.
Due to heavy rain in Coimbatore last night, the 12 feet high compound wall built in the Smart City project near the Sekar Nagar residential area completely collapsed to a length of about 50 feet. A nearby electricity pole also collapsed causing a mild fire.
As the accident happened at midnight, a major mishap was averted. People in the area said the compound wall collapsed in less than 3 months after the completion of the construction work. They alleged that the tasks were carried out in an emergency as the election approached.
The public also blamed the use of substandard construction materials for the wall. They also said other walls should be demolished and rebuilt or fully inspected. The people of the area were shocked to see the compound wall collapse after one day's heavy rain.
