Turnout for vaccination against COVID-19 records massive drop in Coimbatore district

Coimbatore: city has recorded a massive drop in people vaccinating against COVID-19 as of Wednesday, since the vaccines have been made available in the district.

Coimbatore district recorded that 14,800 people vaccinated on Tuesday, the highest ever record on a single day, according to the Health Department. As of Monday, data from the Health Department reflected that as many as 12,395 people vaccinated against the Coronavirus. Till Wednesday, close to 2.84 lakhs of people have been vaccinated.

But, the district saw only 4,848 people vaccinated on Wednesday which reflects a massive decline. Officials opine that this could probably be due to the indifference of people in wanting to be vaccinated. This has dealt a big blow to the target that the Tamil Nadu government had set, after witnessing a surge in fresh COVID-19 cases. The State has also instructed all sectors to ensure people above 45 years are vaccinated by April 26.

Officials have already started implementing strict guidelines and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) in Coimbatore as fresh cases continue to emerge daily. Coimbatore district saw 540 new cases on Wednesday, taking the tally to 64,687 cases. The number of active cases stood at 4,544 with 521 people reported to have been discharged from various treatment facilities. The number of death toll reached 703 on Wednesday, with three more fresh cases proving fatal due to comorbidities.
